The Best Advice for Junior Golfers Wanting to Succeed at the Next Level

Over the last 30 years we have been very fortunate to work with some very talented golfers from around the world. Most students who come to Pacific Golf Academy have one goal:

Develop into a complete player and play collegiate golf

We know earning a golf scholarship is a goal for many families, and in today’s article we are going to share 8 simple lessons to help motivate you to prepare for golf at the next level.

We ask every one of our students one simple thing. Try your best. You might not win the tournament, you might not make the birdie putt, but we want students who will give it their best effort on every shot.

Never forget why you started playing this game…because you love it! Golf is hard, but it should always be fun. If you keep this perspective, you will fall in love with the game and begin to improve!

At Pacific Golf Academy our focus is on the process. Golfers shouldn’t be worried about what score they will shoot. Your focus should be on executing your process. If you focus on the process the results will come.

Golf is not fair. Sometimes you get a lucky bounce and your ball stays in bounds, other days you get an unlucky break and your ball goes out of bounds. Don’t complain, keep a positive attitude and keep working hard.

You might not have the best swing, you might not have the best short game, but make it a personal goal to have the strongest mental game in the field! The mental game is often overlooked but in reality, it is the most important part of the game for tournament players.

Golf is a journey, and throughout this journey you will inevitably experience some difficult times where you are not playing well. These difficult times are important as this is where patience is developed. Shooting a bad score is not the end of the world, it’s a learning experience.

The  ability to “grind” out a round is an important skill set that almost every professional golfer has. What is “grinding”? It’s simply trying your best on every shot and posting the best score you can that day.

While having a good swing and the ability to shoot good scores are needed to earn a college golf scholarship, the most important element golf coaches analyze in junior golfers is their character. Why is that? Because coaches realize everyone can have a bad day on the course. Your score during a tournament isn’t the only thing they will be looking at. Golf coaches are looking at students and asking themselves:

  • Is this junior golfer someone I can coach?

  • Does this junior player have a good attitude?

Carry yourself in a professional manner, treat others with kindness, stay positive, work hard. If you can embrace the challenge of golf and never quit trying your best. You can make it to the next level!
